Going Green in Nepal

Namaste! We are so excited to share with you that the Chandrapata Youth Club are learning sustainable garbage management technology and helping to change the old habits of their parents and village elders.

Now, every household is keeping garbage bins at home and the village has set up collection centers at various corners of the town. They are also working on a "Garbage Collection Centre Program" that can be shared and replicated in surrounding villages.

Our adventure started in the Ereto bookshop in Nukaru. To make sure everything was in order, we went through every single book...hundreds of them! It was a long process, but the excitement of seeing it all become real made the hours feel like just a few minutes.

After going through all the textbooks and library books we had ordered we noticed we had some extra funds left. We decided to buy each of our primary schools 3 boxes full of notebooks. We also added a few more supplies for the schools such as: chalks, blackboard mathematical sets, soccer balls & volleyballs.

We loaded up the tractor, yes the tractor, with the books and supplies and headed out to the school. We opened the boxes and showed the books and supplies to the whole school and encouraged them to use all of it to their benefit. After all the fun, we had to release them to go home since most of them came from miles away and they all had to walk home. As we were leaving we met a student named Dennis who told us when he grows up he would like to be an Ambassador of America. What a great reminder that even though these students live thousands of miles away they still have bright dreams just like us.

Great news! We've been working with Dr. Tumwesigye at Nakasero hospital to establish the logistics, budget, and time frame and it looks like we will be able to treat even more people than we thought with the money we raised through Tipping Bucket!

Our first eye camp will be happening at Kojja Health Center IV on June 22 and 23. We hope to have around 300-400 people attend, treat 30-40 of them for cataracts, and distribute glasses and medication to the rest
according to need. This will be the first of 2 or 3 eye camps we do.
