Learning Blogging Lessons

So I am still very new to blogging.  I was just checking my Google Analytics and was confused.  I was on the week view, but the graph was in the hundreds instead of the twenties, like usual.  So I found out why.  tuaw.com has linked to my post about Sony being clueless and sent about 100 visitors to my blog.  Here is a shot of the Analytics.

So the lesson here is you need high profile links to get more traffic.  Seems simple right? :)

Google is taking over my life...

The Google Dashboard launched a couple of days ago.  I opened it up and was surprised by what I saw.  I use 30 different Google Products.  If they wanted to, they could know everything about me.  Slightly scary, but I still trust them.  They just need to keep my trust.

More Moab Pictures

This is a super pictures.  Bill C. was kind enough to take a picture of us, as we were enjoying the Delicate Arch.

Here is his flickr feed with more pictures of the arch.  He is an awesome photographer.

Education and Religion

As a religious person, I often see conflict between learning, or eduction, and religion.  This quote from John Taylor is enlightening. Listen to his philosophy of education:

"We want also to be alive in the cause of education. We are commanded of the Lord to obtain knowledge, both by study and by faith, seeking it out of the best books. And it becomes us to teach our children, and afford them instruction in every branch of education calculated to promote their welfare, leaving those false acquirements which tend to . . . lead away the mind and affection from the things of God. We want to compile the intelligence and literacy of this people in book-form, as well as in teaching and preaching; adopting all the good and useful books we can obtain; . . . instead of doing as many of the world do, take the works of God, to try to prove that there is no God; we want to prove by God's works that he does exist, that he lives and rules and holds us, as it were, in the hollow of his hand' (Deseret News Weekly, 5 June 1878, 275)"

Popular Study Spot

I counted no less than 12 people studying at this spot. Why is it so popular? It's right outside the testing center. Nothing like a little last minute cramming in the fresh air.

Facebook Memorial

Holy Cow.  I was just thinking about this and wondering what would be done.

A student at BYU passed away last week.  This has unfortunately happened twice while I have been here at school.  I saw an invite to the memorial service on facebook and I clicked on the link to the students profile.  His wall was full of thoughts from friends and family.  An impromptu memorial to his memory.  I loved the idea.

But it got me thinking.  What will happen in the future?  How does Facebook deal with someone who has died?  Can the family ask for the profile to be taken down? or changed?

Then I saw this post from the facebook blog.

http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=163091042130

I think it is a sensible solution.  Have the option to turn the profile into a memorial.

However I think there is still some discomfort here.  Will facebook in 100 years (if it is even around in 100 years) become a huge collection of digital memorials?

What do you think?

A New Kind of Writer

This was unexpected.  I stumbled across this story and read the whole thing.

http://robinsloan.com/2009/41

Very interesting read.

The best part was his story was about what he really is.  A new kind of writer.  Working in-between the printed page and the internet.  I think more and more writers are going to become more and more like him.
