Google Voice is Tight (that's slang for great)

Super sweet. I had a Google Voice invite sitting in my inbox for a while. I finally used it. Chose a number that is easy to type, clicked the boxes, then Google called my phone, I entered a code, and then I was in. It was way cool. Right when the lady on the line said, (in that weird robot voice) that's it the screen also switched to done. Technology is just amazing sometimes. :)

I will be posting my feelings about the service and how I am using it soon.

Photoshop Mobile

When Adobe releases a mobile version of Photoshop you know it should be quality. And they didn't disappoint us. While I expected a little more creativity out of the Adobe guys, the free App does a great job. You can control exposure and saturation and tint. There are about 10 effects you can apply as well. Here are the edited versions of some photos as well as the originals and a screenshot. If you don't have a on phone picture editting App already, give Photoshop Mobile a try. You can't beat free.

New Family Search is Sweet

So family history isn't on the cutting edge of technology.  But it is really fun.  And the new Family Search (http://www.new.familysearch.com) makes it a lot easier.  Pulling from all the different databases that are available, it puts your family info together and organizes it.

This is brilliant because lots of people were working super hard to find their ancestors only to find out some already had that info.  This reduces duplication and wasted effort, and makes it easy to find out,

"Where do I come from?"

Check it out.

2 Sweet Desktops

I don't know what it is, but I have to change my desktop picture and my iPhone background at least once a month.

Here are two beautiful images for a desktop.

Enjoy!

Dealing With Problem Students - Getting Feedback

On page 216 of Made to Stick, a story is shared about dealing with problems students.  The take away of the story is that problem students are often showing off for their peers.  If you can communicate that their peers don't appreciate the problems and disruptions, they will often stop the behavior.

In the story the teacher knew the other students were against the problem student because they wrote about him in their journals and suggested ways to deal with him.

I started thinking of a system to get student feedback in quick and easy ways.  The best one I thought of was texting or emailing a question to the students that they respond to.  This could be great because you could ask all the students different questions.  For example you could ask students what they thought of Student 12's behavior etc.

I think that as we teach we need to include feedback loops.  We need to make it easy for students to tell us how we are doing, leading to better quicker learning by our improved teaching.

Don't Mess With Texas

I first heard the phrase "Don't Mess With Texas" from some Texans in the freshmen dorms.  You know the guys with the Texas flag in their window.  I thought it was just a catchy phrase showing off that oh-so-strong Texas pride.

I was just reading in Chip and Dan Heath's "Made to Stick" about how to get certain ideas to stick.  I read about an anti littering campaign that used the "Don't Mess" slogan.

Then the crazy thought hit me... What if that ad campaign was the origin of the phrase?  I googled it and amazingly enough, it was!  There is even book on the story of the slogan!

As pointed out in Made to Stick, the "Don't Mess" ads were some of the most successful ever.  They reduced littering by 72 percent and have become synonymous with Texas itself.

Here is some more info.
